Trying to dig a little deeper into Colorado State’s majors, just starting out in your major search, or want to see what it looks like to be a student in a certain major? Our “3 reasons” series is the perfect place to start. In each installment, we’re bringing you three standout reasons to choose a major, written by the people who work and teach in those majors every day.

Computer science is the study of computation systems. Students who study computer science in CSU’s College of Natural Sciences understand technology at a deep level and use that knowledge to solve problems and improve life in nearly every industry in the world. Here are three reasons why the computer science major might be for you.

#1. You can choose your own path in one of six career-ready concentrations.

The Computer Science major is set up so that you are prepared to enter your future career. You can choose whether to pursue the broad computer science concentration or select one of our more-specialized concentrations: Human-Centered Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Computing Systems, Networks and Security, or Software Engineering.

#2. You’ll be able to get real-world experience through your undergrad internship.

As a computer science undergraduate at CSU, you’ll have the chance to take an internship. Internships are impressive to graduate schools and employers because they show that students are able to take the lessons they learn in class and apply them to real-world scenarios. The College of Natural Sciences has a dedicated career counselor who helps you find internships that fit your interests and set you up for future career success.

#3. The Computer Science community is collaborative, supportive, and ready to meet you.

You will find new friends and a strong support network in one (or several!) of the 10 computer science student groups at CSU. With groups focused on data science, computer security, and women in computing, there are options for everyone. We are ready to welcome you into our community.
